This is in response to your November 22, 1986 letter concerning a deviation request by Southern California Edison from the requirement to install a reactor vessel level indicator at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 (SONGS-1). The issue was discussed at the June 12, 1986 Commission meeting on whether to allow SONGS-1 to restart.
At the Oune 12 meeting the licensee informed the Commission that they intended to file a deviation request. On June 20, 1986, the licensee did file the request. The NRC staff has informed my office that they met with the licensee.on October 2, 1986 to discuss the request. A summary of that meeting was issued on October 7, 1986. The deviation request is still under review by the NRC technical staff and no decision has been made at this time.
The June 20 deviation request and the October 7 meeting summary should be on file at the SONGS-1 local public document room. I hope you will find this information helpful.
