Diane Screnci, (610) 337-5330 Email: OPA1.RESOURCE@nrc.gov Neil Sheehan, (610) 337-5331 NRC ASSIGNS NEW SENIOR RESIDENT INSPECTOR TO HOPE CREEK NUCLEAR POWER PLANT Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials in the agencys Region I Office in King of Prussia, Pa., have selected Fred Bower as the new senior resident inspector for the Hope Creek nuclear power plant in Hancocks Bridge (Salem County), N.J. He joins Amar Patel, the NRC resident inspector assigned to the plant.

Bower first joined the NRC in 1990 as a reactor engineer in the Region I Office. Most recently, he worked as the senior resident inspector at the Peach Bottom nuclear power plant in York County, Pa. In addition to his work as a region-based inspector, Bower has also been assigned as a resident inspector at the Salem nuclear power plant, located adjacent to Hope Creek, and at the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Calvert County, Md.

Prior to joining the NRC, Bower worked in progressively more responsible positions associated with the repair, modification and overhaul of naval ships and submarines at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va.

Bower is a graduate of Virginia Tech, where he earned a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering. He also holds a masters degree in engineering management from Old Dominion University.

Fred Bowers extensive experience and commitment to safety will help the NRC ensure that Hope Creek conducts operations with the highest safety standards to protect the public health and safety, NRC Region I Administrator William Dean said.

Each U.S. commercial nuclear plant has at least two NRC resident inspectors. They serve as the agencys eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring major work projects and interacting with plant workers and the public.
