Subject:

Decommission not Re-licensing of South Texas Project Units 1 & 2 Docket ID # NRC-2010-375 11-:511"11/Z R7Qt~!" !7D

Dear Ms. Gallagher,

I want to see the Decommissioning of the South Texas Project Units 1 & 2, not the Re-licensing.

It makes much more sense to allow these plants to retire in 2027 and 2028 instead of adding another 20 years of operation for these reactors given all of the inherent public and ecological dangers, liability and cost to maintain, repair and mitigate the known hazards.

You can review a summary of the troubled history of these reactors online at www.NukeFreeTexas.org Issues relevant to NOT re-license South Texas Project Units I & 2 include, but are not limited to:

Risks of an accident, fires, or explosions at one or more reactors at the site, risks that could increase with aging reactors.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission's 1982 CRAC 2 study found that there could be 18,000 early deaths ifa serious accident occurred at the STP site.

Safer, cleaner alternative ways to generate the same power (in essence 'to boil water') exist today and should be used and funded, just like the Nuclear and Petroleum industries have been subsidized by the U.S. Government to the tune of BILLIONS of dollars annually.

Vast consumption of water use, largely Colorado River water, which is increasingly needed for drinking water, livestock and farming in an era of more frequent and lengthy periods of drought.

The main cooling reservoir is leaking out of the bottom: How and when will this be repaired?

Climate change considerations: The rising atmospheric temperatures could affect whether there is enough cool water to cool the reactors.

There is no adequate solution for radioactive waste, so it makes sense to stop generating more.

Thank you for your hard work and consideration of these issues. Please be sure to keep me informed as this regulatory process proceeds.

Sincerely, Bill Stout Green Party of Texas
