SUMMARY

OF TELEPHONE CONFERENCE CALL HELD ON JANUARY 8, 2010, BETWEEN THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION AND ARIZONA PUBLIC SERVICE COMPANY, CONCERNING CONTAINMENT COATINGS PERTAINING TO THE PALO VERDE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNITS 1, 2, AND 3, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NOS. ME0254, ME0255, AND ME0256)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff and representatives of Arizona Public Service Company (APS) held a telephone conference call on January 8, 2010, to discuss the applicants September 10, 2009, response to the NRCs request for additional information (RAI) dated August 11, 2009. This response concerned proper maintenance of the protective coatings inside containment for the period of extended operation for the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1, 2, and 3, license renewal application.

The telephone conference call was useful in clarifying the need for coating inspections, as described in the applicants responses to Generic Letter 2004-02 (dated February 28 and March 13, 2009), to continue into the period of extended operation.

APS representatives stated that they would submit a letter to the NRC with a commitment to incorporate into the Updated Final Safety Analysis Report (UFSAR), in the next update required by 10 CFR 50.71(e), a requirement to assess the containment building interior coating system in accordance with the PVNGS Containment Coatings Condition Assessment procedure every operating cycle. This requirement was described in a letter to the NRC dated March 13, 2009.

This has the effect of continuing the coating assessments into the period of extended operation.

Angela Krainik, of APS staff, stated that the submittal of this letter was to be on or before April 30, 2010. Enclosed is a listing of the participants. The applicant had an opportunity to comment on this summary.
