SUBJECT:

EDWIN I. HATCH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 (HNP), DISCUSSION OF REVIEW SCHEDULE REGARDING ALTERNATE SOURCE TERM APPLICATION (TAC NOS. MD2934 AND MD2935)

Dear Mr. Madison:

By letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) dated August 29, 2006, Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc. (SNC), proposed to revise the HNP licensing and design basis with a full scope implementation of an alternative source term. To date we have issued requests for additional information (RAI) in the technical areas of radiological dose assessment, electrical power supplies, seismic capability of piping and ventilation systems, balance-of-plant systems, containment systems, human factors issues, and meteorology and chemical engineering. SNC has provided responses in some of these areas.

On January 9, 2008, we discussed the schedule for the remaining review with representatives of your staff. We expressed our objective of ensuring that sufficient resources be provided so that a decision may be reached by the NRC staff on this licensing action within a 2-year period from its submittal. Your staff committed to providing responses to five currently outstanding RAIs by February 29, 2008. We also noted that, at this phase of the review, we can expect numerous follow-up efforts such as telephone conferences, further RAIs and perhaps meetings to assist in clarifying issues and documenting the information needed for our review. We noted that these issues would necessitate a prompt response by SNC in order to complete the NRC staffs review by July 31, 2008. Our understanding is that SNC committed to providing the resources to accomplish that objective.

The purpose of this letter is to document our communication and to confirm our request for SNCs commitment of resources to support the objective mentioned above.

Sincerely,

/RA/
