Dear Mr. Kauffman:

We are continuing our review of your environmental report dated August 18, 2005 for your application for renewal of Facility Operating License No. R-75, dated December 15, 1999 for the Ohio State University Research Reactor (OSURR). During our review of your environmental report, questions have arisen for which we require additional information and clarification. Please provide responses to the enclosed request for additional information within 30 days of the date of this letter. In accordance with 10 CFR 50.30(b), your response must be executed in a signed original under oath or affirmation. Please note that your timely response is needed in order to support completion of the review of the renewal application.

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY RESEARCH REACTOR DOCKET NO. 50-150

1. Explain how OSURR ensures compliance with applicable environmental quality standards and requirements. Include discussion pertaining to the Costal Zone Management Act (CZMA), the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and the National Historical Preservation Act (NHPA).

2. Paragraph 6 of the environmental report states, The highest conservative estimate for a TEDE to a member of the general public is 61.47 mrem/year as calculated in procedure RS-18, Environmental Monitoring.

a. In accordance with 10 CFR 20.1302(b), please provide a sample calculation of a TEDE to a member of the general public. Please explain any assumptions made and measurement techniques of included data, and define all variables and constants used in the calculation.

3. Paragraph 8 of the environmental report states, ... the OSURR made transfers of solid waste to the Radiation Safety Section of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety that totaled 12 cubic feet or about 2.4 cubic feet per year of un-compacted low-level radioactive waste.

a. Please provide the total activity of the transferred solid waste.
