Inspection Summary Inspection on September 25-27, 1979 (Report Nos. 50-329/79-21; 50-330/79-21)

Areas Inspected: Review of procedures: observation of preservice inspection (PSI) work activities, and revi:tw of nondestructive exa.nination (NDE)

data and reports. The inspector involved a total of 17 inspector hours on site by one NRC inspector.

Results: No items of noncompliance or deviations were identified.

General Information a.

CPCo developed the PSI program and contracted B & W to perform the PSI in accordance with ASME Section XI, 1977 Edition, Summer 1978 Addenda. CPCo has requested to work to the 1977 Edition, Summer 1978 Addenda. To date NRC has not granted permission to perform to Section XI later than 1974 Edition, Summer 1975 Addenda. This an unresolved item pending the NRC's approval of ASME Section XI,1977 Edition, Summer 1978 Addenda.

The ANII was hired as a third party to be on site at all times during the PSI.

The PSI is to be completed approximately January 1981, for both units.

There will be no radiography, eddy current or leak testing performed during the PSI.

Observation of Work and Work Activities a.

The inspector observed and had discussions with B & W personnel durir; review of the NDE activities. These observations included cal.bration, preparation of the welds, performance of the examinations and the documentation.

b.

Ultrasonic examination (UT) was observed being performed on the Reactor Coolant System piping cold leg section c, pipe to pipe weld, 2.10" thick, ID#2-CCA-7-6.

c.

Magnetic particle examination (MT) was observed being performed on the Main Steam System A, pipe to ell weld, 2.38" thick, ID#2-ELB-11-17.

No items of noncompliance or deviations were identified.

5.

Review of Data Reports and Audits The inspector examined and determined that the data reports demon-strated that the QA/QC requirements were met. The required infor-mation was available for the following systems:
