June 14, 1983 Docket No. 50-295 Docket No. 50-304 Commonwealth Edison Company ATTN:

Mr. Cordell Reed Vice President Post Office Box 767 Chicago, IL 60690 Gentlemen:

Attached is an addendum consisting of a Confirmatory Measurements Program data sheet for Report Nos. 50-295/82-30; 50-304/82-27 transmitted by our letter dated January 17, 1983. This will close Open Items 295/82-30-01 and 304/82-27-01. The analysis was done on a liquid sample collected at Zion Nuclear Generating Station during the inspection on December 6-10, 1982. Strontium-89 and Strontium-90 in this sample were below comparison limits.

Messrs. P. Zwilling and J. Jirka were contacted by telephone on May 13, 1983, in an effort to resolve the disagreement for the tritium analysis.

The cause of the disagreement was not identified. We will examine this matter during our next inspection.

In addition, the February 16, 1983, letter from Mr. Ferrar to Mr. Keppler was discussed with Mr. Zwilling. Attachment B to this referenced letter discusses the action taken in response to commitments made by the licensee following the inspection on December 6-10, 1983.

In regard to Open Items 50-295/82-03-03 and 50-304/82-07-03 concerning breakthrough of the particulate filters, the actions taken appear appropriate. This matter will be reviewed during a future inspection.

In regard to Open Items 50-295/82-30-02 and 50-304/82-27-02 concerning the investigation of the source of Bromine-82 in the containment atmosphere, we have received a copy of the report transmitted by a letter dated May 17, 1983, from Mr. Lentini to Mr. Keppler. This report identifies the most probable source of Bromine-82 as neutron activation of Bromine-81 found orginally in Lake Michigan water. We have no further questions concerning this matter at the persent time.

June 14, 1983 In regard to Open Items 50-295/82-30-04 and 50-304/82-27-04 concerning correction factors to be applied to effluent data to compensate for decay during sampling, we understand the Zion Station is now using the Auto-mated Analytical Instrumentation System (AAIS). This system includes these corrections in its programmed data reduction analysis and these corrections will be reflected in the 1983 effluent report. The need to incorporate these corrections in the 1982 report was discussed with Mr. Zwilling who agreed to amend the 1982 report.

We will examine the action taken on outstanding Open Items during our next inspeci.ic::.

Please attach the addendum to your copy of the inspection report.

We will gladly discuss any question you have regarding this addendum.

Sincerely, jf/.k/M'Mch C. J. Paperie Chief Emergency Preparedness and Radiological Safety Branch Enclosure: As stated cc w/ enc 1:
