By letter dated August 17, 2020, Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) submitted an exemption request and license amendment request to support a risk-informed resolution to Generic Letter 2004-02 for the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant (Vogtle) Units 1 and 2. Based on subsequent discussions with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff, the following information is provided:

The volume of fiberglass insulation that would have to be removed from the Vogtle Unit 1 and Unit 2 containment if the risk-informed resolution to Generic Letter 2004-02 is not approved is estimated to be between 4,000 and 5,000 ft3 per unit. This estimate is based on the calculations performed for South Texas Project (STP) (as docketed in ADAMS Accession number ML13175A211) and the similarities between the two Vogtle units and STP. These similarities include the nuclear steam supply system (NSSS) design (4 Loop Westinghouse plant), primary loop piping diameters, and the use of low density fiberglass insulation on most of the piping and equipment in containment.
