Narrative

Report for LER 50-321/1980-062 On 6-12-80, with Unit 1 in cold shutdown, an investigation was begun to determine the

cause

of pavement deflection which occurred beneath a

crane outrigger pad at the intake structure.

,The investigation involved excavation of the pavement and the ground beneath until reaching the service water lines below.

There was no damage done to the Unit 1 or 2 service water (PSW) or RHRSW piping in this area.

The investigation-was continued further and revealed two 1.

the separati.on of fill from underneath the problems: _

2.

existence of a

temporary pipe support used

piping, and during construction which.should have been removed then.

This temporary support has been removed.

Presently, a testing plan consisting of numerous soil samples from bowings at the intake structure is underway.

The A/E is assisting 'in the investigation and in determining a proposed correction to the problem.

'An acceptable resolution will be initiated once the results of the investigation are in and the appropriate course of action has been determined.

An update to this report will be issued.
