NARRATIVE

REPORT Reportable Occurrence Report No. 50-321/1980-72 With the reactor in the run mode at 2426 f!WT, the operatcr noticed a Hi-Low Flow Alarm for the Reactor Building Vent Sample System.

Lab and Operations personnel were sent to investigate. The' sample pump had-failed, and the lab personnel attempted to valve in and start the backup pump.

It would not start.

A main-tenance request was initiated notino that Technical Specifications made it a seven-day limiting condition of op ation.

The cause of the backup pump not

,qg has been determined to be swelled carbon vanes.

This was probably,

roisture. We will revise our sampling procedure to switch pumps.

. 'ently to minimize moi'sture buildup and improve the reliability of the bactue pump.

- There were no Technical Specifications violated and tha pump was operating within 12 hour1.388889e-4 days
0.00333 hours
1.984127e-5 weeks
4.566e-6 months
s-of the time the alarm was noticed by the operator.

This type of pump is used in the Main Stack and Recombiner Building Off Gas Sample System.

The pumps in the Main Stack do have a history of similar failures.

There were no. effects upon safe plant operation or upon public health or safety.
