A March 3, 1988 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE PNO-!!-88-15A This preliminary. notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POS$1BLE safety or
- public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all. that -is known by the Region !! staff on this date.
FACILITY: North Carolina State University Licensee Emergency Classification:
Pulstar hotification of Unusual Event Docket No. 50-297 Alert Site Area Emergency General Emer en:y g K Not Applicab e g,
SUBJECT:
REACTOR COOLANT LEAK IN UNLESTRICTED AREA (j)[ [
This updates PNO-II-88-15,. issued 3/1/88.
Seven-ground locations above the outside piping have been sampled, at the surface and at a depth of three feet. No radioactivity above natural background has been detected in any of the soil samples in the unrestricted areas.
P The reactor water sample taken last week has been analyzed. Analysis of the sample indi-cates that the concentrations of radionuclides are less than the NRC limit for release to '
the unrestricted area. Principal long-lived radionuclides detected were Zn-65 and Ag-110m.
Tim cold leg has been drained and the hot leg is being drained at present. Even with the legs isolated, an additional leak may be present, possibly through the pool liner. The total leak rate is approximate 1/ 3 gallons per hour. The licensee plans to conduct deeper !
5 core samples to locate the leak. In addition, the licensee will be sampling the stors sewer lines that drain the outside valve pit where elevated contamination levels were i found. The licensee is in comununication with the University of Buffalo, which had sustained a similar preblem. Both regional inspectors are still onsite.
The licensee issued a press release and had a press conference yesterday.
The State of North Carolina has been informed.
