%,***** ,d,g KING OF PRUSSIA, PENNSYLVANIA 19406 JAN 15 fggs MEMORANDUM FOR: Robert B. Minogue, Director Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research FROM: Thomas E. Murley, Regional Administrator, RI

SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR STUDY OF POSSIBLE EXPOSURE PATHWAYS TO MAN FOR RADIONUCLIDES DISCHARGED TO SANITARY SEWER SYSTEMS i

This refers to your December 18, 1984 memorandum which requested comments on the subject topic.

We concur with the outline in general and have one suggestion to expand the scope of this study. Since it is likely that a very substantial fraction of the radionuclides released into sanitary sewer systems results from the discharge of patient excreta from hospitals, we believe that the study should include this source tem in its scope. We recognize that 10 CFR 20.303(d) exempts excreta from individuals undergoing medical diagnosis or therapy from the limitations of that section, but believe that valuable infomation could be obtained from including these releases in the study. Also, we have sent a copy of the study outline to the State of New York for review and will let you know if they have any coments.

We will be happy to assist in any way we can with, the study.
