RE: Unit 2 pool wall update 9/28/05 update;

• Supported Jim Dyer (NRC) and his staff in a tour of the FSB loading bay. The tour went into the excavation area.

• The new collection system was installed at the end of day yesterday (gutter system epoxied to the wall, with plastic coverage over all hairline cracks showing signs of moisture). Overnight, we collected approximately 1 liter of water, for an estimate of 1300 ml/day (vs. previous collections of 500 ml/day). We have no indication that.the leak is increasing, and we clearly improved our collection process. We will continue to trend this daily. The 1300 is an calculated estimate, it may change tomorrow with a full 24 hour2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br /> cycle of collection.

• Written position on active vs. inactive leak is in draft form. As mentioned yesterday, this will be the topic of a fleet challenge discussion.

• Structural and water transport calculations need 2 more days before the vendor is finished. The delay is not due to any technical changes or complications, it is incorporation of all comments to reviewer satisfaction.

• Underwater Construction was on site today and finished their visit. They expect to have estimates for several inspection scenarios by Monday 10/3. They will be adding to our OE evaluation.

• We have identified 3 wells (down stream of the U2 pool and not in the Ul monitoring plan) that can be accessed to grab underground samples. We have confirmed the wells have water (i.e. they are not dry). The wells are in the U2 transformer yard, at GTI and near GT1. We are proceeding to obtain samples.

• Talked with Westinghouse the past couple days. They are doing OE searches for us, and sending inquiries to their project managers and site representatives. They are also preparing to submit this issue into their Innovation Program, which obtains Westighouse funding to assist in resolution.

• CR response is in draft, due 10/3.

9/27/05 update

• Hosted Geri Shapiro from Senator Clinton's office today for a tour of the FSB loading bay and observation of the crack area. She understands the negligible radiological impact on public health and safety. She anticipates the Senator's requested conversation with NRC Chairman Diaz to be around earlier notification of this type of issue. Geri did say that she got an early heads up (a phone call) from someone in the NRC, well before the press release.

• Water collection remains unchanged - 500 ml/day. Results are consistent with previous samples. The results do not point conclusively to the water being fresh from the pool or old trapped water. We expect a written position by 9/29.

We will use the RP peer group for a fleet challenge call.

• Structural and water transport calculations are expected 9/28.

• We are searching within the fleet for hydrology experts. Bill Eaton has helped us and we will have a fleet call when our vendor renders his written opinion.

• The improved collection system (using a gutter) is installed. We will reinstall the plastic with it so that we do not lose water to evaporation.

• Underwater Construction will be on site tomorrow to discuss in-pool liner inspections. We will include the previous repair area in the scope.

• Pipe pen work orders are being written to clean the wall and then secure plastic over shrinkage cracks to determine if we are losing moisture due to evaporation.

• OE from Salem tells us that we should confirm that the U3 drain is not clogged. Work orders are being written and the work week manager is being contacted.

• There are existing wells in the U2 area, for example the transformer yard. We are factoring these into our options for mitigation.

• We will start a KT analysis shortly.
