No: 18-014 May 3, 2018 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Accepts Application for Subsequent License Renewal of Turkey Point Reactors The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has accepted for review Florida Power and Light Companys application to renew the operating licenses of Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Units 3 and 4 in Homestead, Fla., for an additional 20 years. FP&L submitted the subsequent license renewal application on Jan. 30.

The application, minus proprietary details, is available on the NRC website. FP&L is seeking a second renewal for the Turkey Point units, approximately 20 miles south of Miami. The NRC approved the initial license renewal of 20 years in June 2002, with Unit 3 currently licensed to operate through July 19, 2032, and Unit 4 through April 10, 2033.

Accepting the application for review, or docketing the application, does not indicate whether the Commission will approve or reject the request. More information about subsequent license renewal is available on the NRC website.

The NRC has published in the Federal Register a notice of opportunity to intervene in an adjudicatory hearing. Petitions to intervene in a hearing must be filed by July 2, by anyone whose interest may be affected by the proposed license renewal and who wishes to participate as a party in the proceeding. More information on the hearing process is available on the NRC website.
