OPA2@nrc.gov Roger Hannah (404)562-4417 NRC SENDS AUGMENTED INSPECTION TEAM TO REVIEW SECURITY AT FLORIDA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT AND ISSUES CONFIRMATORY ACTION LETTERThe Nuclear Regulatory Commission is sending an Augmented Inspection Team (AIT) to review security issues at the Turkey Point nuclear power plant, operated by Florida Power & Light Company near Florida City, about 30 miles southeast of Miami.An AIT is formed to review the circumstances surrounding more significant issues at NRC- licensed facilities. The NRC team inspection includes specialists from the agency's Region II office in Atlanta and from its headquarters in Rockville, Md. The team is expected to spend about one week at the site before returning to the regional office where the information they have gathered will

be analyzed and evaluated.In addition to the AIT, the NRC is issuing a Confirmatory Action Letter to FP&L to confirmthat the company has taken or plans to take appropriate corrective actions and has initiated its own

investigation of the issues."This inspection team will comprehensively assess the Turkey Point security issues to ensurethat the security program is being effectively implemented," said NRC Region II Administrator William Travers.

Details of NRC inspections of security at the nation's nuclear power plants are not publiclyavailable. The NRC has determined that certain security information should not be made public if it

could reasonably be useful to an adversary.
