MODERNIZATION PLAN #

4 REGULATORY INFRASTRUCTURE PUBLIC MEETING Additional Input from NEI/Industry Preliminary, Unofficial, Partial Poll Results and MP 4Ab Deliverables for 2017 April 13, 2017 1

MP4a Success- Then What?

MP4a Success =

-revised regulation that results in a more predictable, quantifiable, lower risk, scalable, path through the LAR process for safety digital upgrades Which Begs the Question:

-If MP4a is successful, what does industry estimate will result in terms of digital safety system upgrades, and specifically LAR submittals?

2 Future Safety Related Upgrades So- we took a preliminary poll:

-Very Limited # of Utilities / Units

-N on-committal, Best Guess, Anonymous -Focused on LAR Submittals -Some (not all) Included 50.59

-Very Preliminary, Unofficial, Partial Poll Over the next 8 years, industry may begin-

-LAR's for ~10 Protection Systems

-LAR's for ~10 Safety Support Systems

-50.59's for

~20+ Safety Support Systems 3

MP 4Ab Deliverables for 2017 Develop a DI&C LAR guidance document for licensees. Define the process for using the fundamental design principles. Add a wrapper that: -Use the fundamental design principles from the white paper

-Define purpose for each section in the document -Suggest the regulatory findings for each section -Define the information to be provided in the LAR -Use standard LAR format from LIC-101 -Consider providing as an appendix to NEI 06-02, Rev. 2 -Industry pilot projects are under formal utility evaluation Generate a NEI/NRC project plan, including schedule milestones, that defines how this document will be applied and how pilot lessons learned will be incorporated The NRC to generate an endorsement letter for the document, with NRC to endorse in the longer term through the RG process 4
