SALEM UNIT 2 OPERATIONS

SUMMARY

REPORT FEBRUARY 1984 Unit No. 2 began the month in cold shutdown as reassembly of the generator continued. Major items accomplished durief the month included: installation of the generator exciter; assembly of the blower housing; performance of a bearing oil flush; and alignment checks of the generator couplings and bearings. Additionally, all hydrogen seal housing bolts and Bellville washers were replaced.

Other work during this period included reassembly of No. 23 Containment Fan Coil Unit, and replacement of No. 21 Containment Sump

, Pump. Unit No. 2 entered Mode 3 on February 4, however, the discovery l of leaking Safety Injection System check valves caused the unit to be cooled down on February 7. An oil seal Inak was discovered on the turbine thrust bearing and required disassembly and refurbishment of l the bearing parts. Following the replacement of the four SJ143 check valves and inspection of the four SJ56 check valves, the unit was returned to Mode 3 on February 17, at 1737 hours0.0201 days
0.483 hours
0.00287 weeks
6.609285e-4 months
. Later, at 1757 hours0.0203 days
0.488 hours
0.00291 weeks
6.685385e-4 months
, an Unusual Event was declared when Steam Generator Safety Valve 22MC14 prematurely lif ted and would not reseat until pressure was decreased. A lift check was performed on all steam generator safety valves prior to cooling down on February 19, to investigate and repair leakage past Steam Generator Safety Valves 22MS11, 22MS13, and 22MS14.

The valves were repaired and a unit heatup was commenced on February

[]s 21, 1984. A reactor startup was performed, with criticality being achieved on February 24, at the completion of generator reassembly.

Post maintenance non-synchronized operational testing started the same day. The reactor was then taken .,uberitical and steam generator safety valve lift checks were performed. During the pre-synchronization test period, it was determined that a hydrogen leak into the stator water cooling system existed. Investigation revealed the stator water nipple for Coil Bil, turbine end, was l le3 king. The nipple was replaced, rebrazed, and tested satisfactorily.
