solution occurred at Hepe Creek Generating Station on the above

'date when an underground pipeline was breached during-

-construction excavation. The' spill was immediately reported to the NJDEP, the USEPA and the National--Response Center. j

LPublic Service Electric and Gas Co. personnel took immediate '

corrective action to stop the spill and to clean up the spilled

-material.- The solution was contained within the excavation and was neutralized with soda ash. Approximately nine 55 gallon drums were' filled with liquid solution removed from the 1

' excavation.' These drums were placed in storage and are awaiting classification for proper disposal. In-addition, approximately  ;

65 cubic yards of contaminated soil was removed and stockpiled onsite. The pipeline was repaired and the excavation backfilled.

On September 13, 1989 a reprerJentative of the southern regional enforcement office for the Division of Hazardous Waste Management arrived onsite to investigate the spill. An NOV was issued which included _the requirement to submit a workplan describing post excavation sampling. This workplan was submitted to the Division lof Hazardous Waste Management on October 4, 1989. For more information regarding this spill please see the workplan.

Followup sampling in accordance with the workplan and with the advise and consent of th; southern regional enforcement-office was performed on October 27,-1989. We are currently awaiting the Lanalytical results, which we feel will confirm that adequate-measures were taken to remediate the spill condition. Dispocal of-the spilled material will be performed in accordance with Federal and New Jersey regulations.
