No.93-143FORIMMEDIATERELEASETel.301/504-2240(Wednesday,September29,1993)NRCADVISORYCOMMITTEEONREACTORSAFEGUARDSTOMEETINBETHESDA,MD,OCTOBER7-8TheNuclearRegulatoryCommission'sAdvisoryCommitteeonReactorSafeguardswillholdatechnicalmeetingOctober7-8in Bethesda,Maryland.Themeeting,whichisopentothepublic,willbeheldinRoomP-110,7920NorfolkAvenue.(ACRSmeetingschedulesaresubjecttochange.Anyoneplanningtoattendshouldconfirmtheschedulethedaybeforethe meetingbycalling301/492-4516.)AlthoughmeetingsoftheACRSareopentothepublic,theyarenotpartoftheNRC'spublichearingprocess.TheACRS,an advisorygrouptotheCommission,conductsindependent,highly technicalreviewsofsafetyconsiderationsrelatedtonuclear facilities.Whilemembersofthepublicmayattendthemeeting, thecommitteewillconsideronlyoralorwrittenstatements limitedtospecificmatterssetforthinaNoticeofMeetingthat willbepublishedintheFederalRegisteronOctober1.OnThursday,October7,from8:30a.m.to8:45a.m.,theACRSchairmanwillcommentonitemsofcurrentinterest.From8:45a.m.to11:00a.m.,thecommitteewillmeetwithrepresentativesoftheNRCstafftodiscussElectricPower ResearchInstitute's(EPRI)utilityrequirementsdocumentfor advancedlightwaterreactordesignsandtheassociatedNRC staff'sSafetyEvaluationReport,withemphasisonhowthepolicy issuesrelatedtotheadvanceddesignshavebeendealtwithin theEPRIdocument.From11:00a.m.to12:30p.m.,thecommitteewillmeetwithrepresentativesoftheNRCstafftodiscussaproposedresolution ofgenericissue23,"ReactorCoolantPumpSealFailure."From1:30p.m.to5:30p.m.,thecommitteewillmeetwithrepresentativesoftheNRCstaffandGeneralElectric(GE)to discusssevereaccident/probabilisticriskassessmentissuesfor GE'sadvancedboilingwaterreactordesign.

From5:30p.m.to6:30p.m.,thecommitteewilldiscussproposedACRSreportstotheNRCregardingitemsconsidered duringthismeeting.OnFriday,October8,from8:30a.m.to8:35a.m.,theACRSchairmanwillmakeopeningremarks.From8:35a.m.to10:00a.m.,thecommitteewillmeetwithrepresentativesoftheNRCstafftodiscussissuesarisingfroma steamgeneratortuberuptureeventthatoccurredMarch14,1993, atthePaloVerde2nuclearpowerplantinArizona.From10:00a.m.to11:00a.m.,thecommitteewillmeetwithrepresentativesoftheNRCstafftodiscussproposedamendments toNRC'sPart55regulationregardingrenewaloflicenseand requalificationrequirementsforlicensedreactoroperators.From11:15a.m.to12:15p.m.,thecommitteewillmeetwithrepresentativesoftheNRCstafftodiscussaproposedresolution ofgenericissue67.5.1thataddressesthevalidityoftechniques tocalculateoffsiteradioactivedoseduetoreleasesfroma designbasissteamgeneratortuberupture.From1:15p.m.to1:45p.m.,thecommitteewilldiscussfutureACRSactivities.From2:30p.m.to2:45p.m.,thecommitteewilldiscussresponsesfromtheNRCExecutiveDirectorforOperationsto recentACRSrecommendations.From3:00p.m.to5:00p.m.,thecommitteewilldiscussproposedACRSreports.From5:00p.m.to6:00p.m.,thecommitteewilldiscussthestatusofACRSsubcommitteeactivities,includingreportson thermalhydraulicphenomenaandcomputersinnuclearpowerplant
