No: 23-026 March 31, 2023 CONTACT: Ivonne Couret, 301-415-8200 NRC Awards Fiscal Year 2023 Grants for Minority-Serving Institutions The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has awarded nearly $1 million to four minority-serving institutions, which are a federally recognized category of educational establishments including Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions.

This years recipients are:

• University of Central Florida, Fellowship for $397,943

• University of North Texas, Fellowship for $400,000

• University of NevadaLas Vegas, Scholarship for $100,000

• Virginia Commonwealth University, Scholarship for $100,000 The Minority-Serving Institutions Grants Program funds minority-serving programs, activities, projects, symposiums and training for the exchange and transfer of knowledge and skills relevant to nuclear safety, security, environmental protection, or any other fields the Commission deems critical to its mission. Under this grant program, minority-serving programs and activities include mentoring, leadership development, training, instruction, developmental learning, research and development, program evaluation, and technical assistance. It also provides assistance through direct institutional subsidies, facilities and equipment acquisition, internships, fellowships, scholarships, and tuition and housing assistance.

The NRC announces grant opportunities on www.grants.gov, which enables the public to find and apply for federal funding opportunities. A panel of expert reviewers, from academia and the NRC, evaluates the grant proposals. The panel composition is diverse, with most reviewers having experience reviewing proposals for government agencies and advanced credentials in nuclear engineering, health physics, radiochemistry or other STEM-related disciplines. Each panelist must certify no conflict of interest for the proposals they evaluate.
