No: 23-020 March 10, 2023 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC to Seek Public Comment on Environmental Review of Monticello Subsequent License Renewal Application

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold an in-person meeting March 22 to discuss the environmental review process for an application requesting an additional 20 years for the already-renewed operating license of the Monticello reactor in Monticello, Minnesota.

Monticello is a boiling-water reactor located approximately 35 miles northwest of Minneapolis. The NRC approved the initial license renewal in November 2006, with the reactor currently licensed to operate through Sept. 8, 2030. The operator, Northern States Power Company-Minnesota, submitted the application Jan. 9.

NRC staff members will conduct a public meeting March 22 from 6-8 p.m. Central time, at the Monticello Community Center, 505 Walnut St. in Monticello. The staff will describe the environmental review process and accept comments from the public about the potential scope of that review. The staff will hold an open house from 5-6 p.m. Central time for informal discussions. People needing accommodations or special equipment to attend or provide comments should contact Jessica Umana by March 16, via email at jessica.umana@nrc.gov or phone at 301-415-5207.

The March 22 meeting, as outlined in a Federal Register notice, is one method for filing comments on the environmental review before the April 10 deadline. The NRC will hold an additional virtual public meeting before the deadline. Comments can also be submitted through regulations.gov under Docket ID NRC-2023-0031, via email to MonticelloEnvironmental@nrc.gov, or by U.S. M ail to Office of Administration, Mail Stop TWFN-7-A60M, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001.

The Monticello subsequent license renewal application is also available at the Monticello Great River Regional Library, 200 W 6th St in Monticello. More information about subsequent license renewal is available on the NRC website.
