No: 23-023 March 14, 2023 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 International Safety Review Team Visits Wolf Creek Nuclear Power Plant A team of 11 international nuclear safety experts is visiting the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant until March 23 to review operational safety practices at the facility in Burlington, Kansas.

The voluntary peer review is coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency, based in Vienna, Austria, and known as an Operational Safety Review Team visit.

Established by IAEA in 1982, the OSART program is designed to assist member states in enhancing the operational safety of nuclear power plants and to promote operational safety through the dissemination of good practices. This will be the 10th OSART review of a U.S.

nuclear power plant since the program began.

Areas to be covered during the review include, but are not limited to, operational experience, training and qualifications, radiation protection, chemistry, emergency planning and preparedness and maintenance.

Once the OSART reviewers have completed their work, they will produce a report identifying best practices and suggesting possible safety improvements. This report will be provided to the plants operator and the U.S. government.
