NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS TO MEET IN BETHESDA, MD, OCTOBER 7-8 The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards will hold a technical meeting October 7-8 in Bethesda, Maryland.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held in Room P-110, 7920 Norfolk Avenue.

(ACRS meeting schedules are subject to change. Anyone planning to attend should confirm the schedule the day before the meeting by calling 301/492-4516.)

Although meetings of the ACRS are open to the public, they are not part of the NRC's public hearing process. The ACRS, an advisory group to the Commission, conducts independent, highly technical reviews of safety considerations related to nuclear facilities. While members of the public may attend the meeting, the committee will consider only oral or written statements limited to specific matters set forth in a Notice of Meeting that will be published in the Federal Register on October 1.

On Thursday, October 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., the ACRS chairman will comment on items of current interest.

From 8:45 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., the committee will meet with representatives of the NRC staff to discuss Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI) utility requirements document for advanced light water reactor designs and the associated NRC staff's Safety Evaluation Report, with emphasis on how the policy issues related to the advanced designs have been dealt with in the EPRI document.

From 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the committee will meet with representatives of the NRC staff to discuss a proposed resolution of generic issue 23, "Reactor Coolant Pump Seal Failure."

From 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., the committee will meet with representatives of the NRC staff and General Electric (GE) to discuss severe accident/probabilistic risk assessment issues for GE's advanced boiling water reactor design.

From 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the committee will discuss proposed ACRS reports to the NRC regarding items considered during this meeting.

On Friday, October 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 8:35 a.m., the ACRS chairman will make opening remarks.

From 8:35 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., the committee will meet with representatives of the NRC staff to discuss issues arising from a steam generator tube rupture event that occurred March 14, 1993, at the Palo Verde 2 nuclear power plant in Arizona.

From 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., the committee will meet with representatives of the NRC staff to discuss proposed amendments to NRC's Part 55 regulation regarding renewal of license and requalification requirements for licensed reactor operators.

From 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., the committee will meet with representatives of the NRC staff to discuss a proposed resolution of generic issue 67.5.1 that addresses the validity of techniques to calculate offsite radioactive dose due to releases from a design basis steam generator tube rupture.

From 1:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m., the committee will discuss future ACRS activities.

From 2:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., the committee will discuss responses from the NRC Executive Director for Operations to recent ACRS recommendations.

From 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the committee will discuss proposed ACRS reports.

From 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the committee will discuss the status of ACRS subcommittee activities, including reports on thermal hydraulic phenomena and computers in nuclear power plant operations.

The meeting may include closed sessions, if required, to discuss proprietary information.
