Bellefont Eagle nest.JPG Rich, As per our phone conversation of October 14, 2008 and in response to your email, I am personally aware of no potential issues pertaining to Federal Endangered or Threatened species in the immediate area of Bellefonte Nuclear Plant that would be affected by construction at the plant. As we discussed on the phone here is a listing of Federal T&E species in Jackson County, Alabama http://www.outdooralabama.com/watchable-wildlife/regulations/endanqeredbycounty.cfm This area along the Tennessee River is habitat for roosting and nesting bald eagles that are protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. There is one active bald eagle nest 1.8 miles northeast of the nuclear plant on Town Creek Attached is a topo map showing the location. We have no Alabama state list of T&E species as such, but afford some species additional protection under our Nongame Wildlife Regulations.

Here is a link to those species and the regulation protecting them. http://wwwloutdooralabama.com/watchable-wildlife/requlations/nonqame.cfm Note that the bald eagle and osprey are on this list.Hope this helps. Let me know if I can help further. I would also suggest that you check with the TVA Heritage Program for additional information.

Bellefonte Nuclear Reactor Units 1 & 2 Reinstatement of Construction Permit Keith: Per our conversation several minutes ago: I'm working on the Environmental Assessment (EA) for reinstatement of the Bellefonte Units 1 & 2 construction permit from my office, and I wanted to update the information provided to us by TVA regarding listed species in the vicinity of Bellefonte as well as Jackson County. The previous EA is several years old. Also, if construction does resume, Bellefonte intends to reroute the southern entrance roadway approx 1,200 ft east, but will still join Hwy 33.Will this rerouting of the entrance impact any listed species or cause any other adverse impacts to the environment?

1 TVA also intends to excavate several borrow pits to obtain clay. The borrow pits will be located in the woods immediately east of the existing main plant buildings.

An EA written in 2003 notes that the Federally-listed gray bat forages along the adjacent Tennessee River. The EA also mentions ospreys are listed as "threatened" by Alabama. Is there also a state classification system for listing species? Thanks Rich Richard E.
