l.PRELIMINARYHEATTESTSONCOMPONENTPARTSThestandardLimitorqueoperatorgearedlimitswitchandtorqueswitchwassubjectedtoadryheattestforapproxi-mately16hoursatatemperatureof375'F.Periodicallyduringthistest,theswitcheswereremovedfromtheovenandactuatedbyhand.Theoperationwassatisfactoryandnomal-'unctionsoccurred.Allpartsfunctionedfreelyandtherewasnobinding,jamming,norabnormaldistortionof.parts.Thetestwassuccessfulinallrespects.2.~PRELIMINARYHEATTESTSONACTUATORAcompletelyassembledandoperationalLimitorqueoperatorwasplaced.inanovenwherethetemperaturewasmaintainedatapproximately325'F.foradurationof12hours.Theunitwaselectricallyoperatedeverythirtyminutesforaperiodofapproximatelytwominutespercycleandusingthegearedlimitswitchestostoptheactuatoratthefullopenandfullclosedpositionoftravel.Indicatinglightcircuitswerealsowired.tothegearedlimitswitches.Thetestwassuccessfulineveryrespect.Therewerenomalfunctionsoftheoperatoranduponinspectionofthecom--ponen'tpartsused,therewasnonoticeabledeteriorationorwear.Thelubricantusedinhegearedlimitswitchdidbecomehardandcaked,howeverthelubricantusedintheLimitorque

gearhousingremainedpliableandhaditsoriginalconsistency.ItwasdeterminedthatthegreaseinthegearedlimitswitchgearhousingshouldbechangedtothesamegreaseasintheLimitorqueoperatorgearhousing.3'..PRELIMINARYLIVESTEPSTESTONACTUATOR~AcompleteLimitorqueactuatorwassetupforelectricaloperationandlivesteamwaspipedintotheconduittapsonthetopofthelimitswitchcompartment.Oneofthebottomconduittapswasleftopentodrainoffanycondensate.Theoperatorwassetuponatimerbasisforoperationoveraperiodofapproximatelyninehoursandoperatingeverythirtyminutesfortwominutespercycle.Duringthistest,thelivesteamintheswitchcompartmentseemedtohavenoeffectwhateveronthefunctionofthe.limitswitchesin'heircontroloftheoperatoratthefull.openandfullclosedpositionoftravel.Inaddition,thelimitswitcheswerewireduptoindicatinglightswhichoperatedsatisfactorily.Thetestwassuccessfulandtherewasnonoticeableeffectonthefunctionofanyofthepartsinthelimitswitchcom-partment.4.HEATAGINGTEST.OFELECTRICMOTORANDELECTRICMOTORWITHBRAKETheelectricmotorfortheLimitorqueoperatortobeusedintheenvironmenttestandanotherelectricmotorequippedwithadisktypebrakeweresub'jectedtoaheatagingtest.

BothelectricmotorsweresenttoReliance,ElectricCo.forheatagetesting.Thistestconsistedofbakingthemotorsatatemperatureof180'C.foratotalof100hourstosimulateagingthemotortoa40yearlifeexpectancy.Motorinsulationcheckswere.madeandfound.to.bewithinnormallimits.There.werenoadverseeffectsonthemotorsandmotorinsulationresi'stancemeasured'infinitytoground.5..SHOCKANDVIBRATIONTESTOFACTUATORTOSIMULATESEISMICCONDITIONSTheLimitorqueoperatortobeusedintheenvironmenttestwasshippedcompletetotheLockheedElectronicsCo.,inPlain-.field,NewJersey,forshockandvibrationtestingtosimulateseismicconditions.Acopyofthisreportisenclosedherewith.ThetestbasicallyconsistedofmountingtheLimitorqueoperatoronashockandvibrationtabletotestitat'20cyclespersecondvibrationat.1Gloadforaperiodoftwominutesononeminuteoff.Thiswouldconstituteonecycle.Thecyclewasrepeatedfivetimesinboththeverticalandhorizontalaxisoftheoperator.Theactualtestreportandphotographsareincludedhere.ThetestwassuccessfulandtherewasnonoticeableeffectwhatsoeverontheLimitorqueoperator.

,~~~6~150LIFECYCLETESTOFLIMITORQUEOPERATORPRODUCINGAPPROXIMATELY16,500POUNDSTHRUSTTheLimitorqueoperatorwasshippedtotheFranklinInstituteResearchLaboratories,Philadelphia,Pennsylvania.Theoperatorwasmountedonastandinsidethetestchamberanda150cycleloadtestwasmadeontheunit.Thistestconsistedofstrokingthe23/8"diametervalvestematotalofapproximately12inchesintwominutes.Thevalvesteminthefullclosedpositionproducedathrustof16,500poundsonarigidplatesecurelyboltedtothetestchamber.Thethrustwasmeasuredbythesamestrain-gaugerecordinginstru-mentusedintheactualenvironmentaltestconductedbytheFranklinInstitute.Theunitwaswiredupsothattheclosing(y.directionandtheopenpositiongearedlimitswitchstoppedtheunitinthefullopenposition.Thespeedof.travelwas6inchesperminute.Afterthelifecycletestingwascompleted,theunitwasinspectedand-foundtobeinexcellentcondition.Therewasnonoticeablewearonanyoftheparts.ThesameelectricImotorwhichhadbeenheatagetestedatRelianceElectricCo.wasusedforthislifeCycletest.Therewasnonoticeableadverseeffectontheelectricmotorandit.functionedproperly.7.TESTOFLIMITORQUEVALVEOPERATORUNDERSIMULATED'REACTORCONTAINMENTPOST-ACCIDENTSTEAMANDCHEMICALENVIRONMENTTheattachedreportoftheFranklinInstituteResearchLaboratoriesdescribestheactualtestingunderthisenviron-

wmentalcondition.Afterthetest.wascompleted,theLimitorqueoperatorwasshippedbacktoPhiladelphiaGearCorporation,KingofPrussia,'ennsylvaniawhereitwasdisassembledandall.partswereinspected.'hotographsareincludedshowingthevarious-partsoftheoperator.Allparts,includingtheelectricmotor,slidewereposition'ransmitter,.seals,bearings,gears,andshafts,wereinspectedandnonoticeablewearwasnoted.However,thegearframe.ofthegearedlimit.switchhadcorrodedandcausedaminorfailure.Thegearedlimitswitchframehadbeenattackedbytheboricacidinthesteamatmosphere.Thiscausedthegearframetocorrodeand..resultedinbinding,upoftheshaftsofthegearedlimitswitchwheretheyextendthroughthegearedlimitswitchhousing.ThiscausedthemalfunctionoftheswitchasdescribedintheFranklinInstituteResearchLabor-atories'eport.Amaterialchangehasbeeninstitutedtocorrectthiscorrosiveactionofthematerialusedinthatparticularswitch.Onallpresent'ordersbeingprocessed,andonallfutureunitstobeshippedtomeetenvironmentalconditionssuchasthis,thegearframehousingofthegeared'limitswitchwillbeabronzematerialwhichisnotsubjectltocorrosionbyboricacidsolutions.Themotorinsulationresistanceafteralltestingwas1,000megohmsacrossall'threemotorterminalstogroundat500volts.
