Webelievethatthesemodifications willresultinanoverallimprovement inplantsafety.ItisourdesiretocompletethefirstphaseoftheRMSupgradeworkduringthisyear'srefueling outages.Inparticular, weintendtohavetheequipment operational inUnit1intimetomeettheoperability datesstatedinourlettersofDecember23,1981(AEP:NRC:0652) andMay14,1982(AEP:NRC:0678) forthesepost-TMIitems.Thenewlowercontainment monitorswhichinitiateclosureofthepurgeisolation valves,areofaredundant designwitheachmonitortrainorientedtoacorresponding Class1Eelectrical train.Thesemonitors, ERS-1300andERS-1400, eachconsistsofparticulate, gaseousandiodinedetecting capability.

TheywillreplacetheoldRll/R12monitors.

Thecontainment monitorswilleachinitiateclosureofasetofContainment Ventilation Isolation (CVI)valves(7of14isolation valvesperUnit)aswasdiscussed inourletterAEP:NRC:0723 datedJuly21,1982.Themodification intheuppercontainment volumeinvolvesreplacing thesingleuppercontainment radiation areamonitor(R2)withtwo,independent, redundant, train-oriented detector/indicator/alarm areamonitorsets,eachofwhichiscapableofautomatically isolating sevencontainment purgeandexhaustvalves.That,is,thetrainAdevicewillbecapableofisolating theseveninboardpurgeandexhaustvalvesandthetrainBdevicewillbecapable'of isolating thesevenoutboardvalves.Thismodification fulfillsthecommitment inourletterofMarch25,1980(AEP:NRC;02951)
