Duke Energy Carolinas, LLC Oconee Nuclear Station, Units 1, 2, and 3 Docket Numbers 50-269, 50-270, and 50-287, Renewed Operating Licenses DPR-38, DPR-47, and DPR-55 Tornado Mitigation License Amendment Request -Response to Request for Additional Information Ref: Letter From John Stang, Senior Project Manager, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, Nuclear Regulatory Commission to Dave Baxter (Duke) dated May 25, 2010, "Request for Additional Information (RAI) Regarding the Licensee Amendment Request for Upgrading the Licensing Basis for Tornado Mitigation." As requested in the referenced letter, Duke Energy Carolinas, LLC (Duke Energy) is providing notification to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) that additional time will be needed for several of the Request for Additional Information (RAI) questions associated with the Tornado Mitigation Strategy License Amendment Request. Specifically, the detailed Protected Service Water design-related information requested in RAI questions 2-27 through 2-30, 2-32, 2-33, 2-34, and 2-36, is not complete at this time due to either being in-progress or having not gone through a final approval process. As such, based on current completion schedules, Duke Energy will submit the responses to these specific questions as they are completed beginning in mid-December 2010,.with the last being in early June 2011. To expedite the process, Duke Energy will post each specific design package on the NRC-accessible SharePoint site and promptly notify the Staff of its availability.

In addition, RAI questions 2-40, 2-41, 2-44, and 2-46, will also require more time to complete.

Duke Energy will submit these responses by August 30, 2010. The remaining 41 responses will be submitted within the requested, 30-day period. If you have any questions in regard to this letter, please contact Stephen C.
