The plant is owned by Entergy Nuclear Operations and located in Covert, Mich., approximately 40 miles west of Kalamazoo.

Pressurized thermal shock is a phenomenon that would occur in a rare accident scenario in which a large amount of cold water has to be injected into the reactor resulting in its rapid cooling. This rapid cooling increases the stresses on the vessel and could challenge the vessels integrity.

We are committed to keeping the public informed about the NRCs oversight of the Palisades plant, said NRC Region III Administrator Charles Casto. This webinar will give us an opportunity to continue to discuss with the public issues of concern to them and how the NRC is handling these technical issues.

The meeting is being held on a Tuesday after typical work hours as a direct result of feedback we received from the public to discuss issues at a more convenient time when people may not be working. The previous webinar on through-wall leaks was held on a Saturday to allow more public participation.

The NRC Region III office, located in Lisle, Ill., will first present information about pressurized thermal shock, NRCs regulations on this issue and how it relates to Palisades.

During the second part of the meeting the NRC staff will answer questions submitted online through the webinar.

The webinar will be held from 5-6 p.m. EDT (4-5 p.m. CDT). Participants will be able to view presentation slides prepared by NRC staff and submit questions in writing over the Internet.

Interested members of the public have to register by following the instructions in the meeting notice in order to participate. Webinar seats must be reserved by March 18. All webinar details and system requirements can be found in the public meeting notice.
