Dave Gasperson, 404-997-4417 NRC Names New Resident Inspector at Oconee Nuclear Station Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials in Atlanta have named Nick Smalley as the agencys new resident inspector at the Oconee Nuclear Station located in Seneca, South Carolina.

Smalley joined the NRC in 2020 as a project engineer in the agencys Resident Inspector Development Program before arriving at the Oconee Nuclear Station. He joins Senior Resident Inspector Jared Nadel at the nuclear power site, operated by Duke Energy.

Before joining the NRC, Smalley received a bachelors degree in biology from Loyola University Chicago and served in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear surface warfare officer. He continues to serve as an officer in the Navy Reserve, following more than eight years of active duty service.

Nick joins a long line of resident inspectors who bring their nuclear expertise from the U.S. Navy to support the NRC safety mission. Im confident he will use that experience to maintain the agencys high standards for regulation at the Oconee nuclear power plant, said NRC Region II Administrator Laura Dudes.

Each U.S. commercial nuclear power plant has at least two resident inspectors. They serve as the agencys eyes and ears at the facility, conduct regular inspections, monitor plant operations and significant work projects, and interact with plant workers and the public.
