No: 21-024 June 22, 2021 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Reviewing Oconees Subsequent License Renewal Application The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has received a subsequent license renewal application from Duke Energy Carolinas LLC, which requests an additional 20 years for the already-renewed operating licenses of Oconee Nuclear Station Units 1, 2 and 3. The application is now available for public inspection on the NRC website.

Duke Energy filed the application June 7, seeking to renew the licenses for a second time.

The Oconee units are pressurized-water reactors in Seneca, South Carolina, located approximately 30 miles southwest of Greenville, South Carolina. The NRC approved the initial license renewal in May 2000, with Unit 1 currently licensed to operate through Feb. 6, 2033; Unit 2 through Oct. 26, 2033; and Unit 3 through July 19, 2034.

The NRC staff is reviewing the application to determine if it has sufficient information to complete the agencys extensive safety and environmental reviews. If the application is determined to be complete, the staff will docket it and publish a notice of opportunity to request an adjudicatory hearing before the NRCs Atomic Safety and Licensing Board.

Information regarding the license renewal process is available on the NRC website. A copy of the Oconee subsequent license renewal application will be available at the Seneca Library, 300 E South 2 nd St, Seneca, SC 29678.
