No: II-15-017 April 6, 2015 CONTACT: Roger Hannah 404-997-4417 Joey Ledford 404-997-4416 NRC Schedules Meeting April 14 to Discuss Agencys Assessment of Oconee Nuclear Plant Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials have scheduled an open house for April 14 to provide information on the agencys assessment of the three operating units at the Oconee nuclear plant during 2014.

The informal open house is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Oconee World of Energy, 7812 Rochester Highway, in Seneca, S.C. There will be informational posters, and NRC staff will be available to answer questions about the safety performance of the three units at the Oconee plant as well as overall NRC oversight and inspection.

The Oconee plant is located near Seneca, S.C., about 30 miles west of Greenville. It is operated by Duke Energy.

Overall, the NRC staff concluded that Oconee Units 1, 2 and 3 operated safely in 2014. There was one violation of low to moderate safety significance related to the licensees failure to identify and correct a crack in a weld on a key safety system in Unit 1 that required additional oversight. However, corrective actions were taken by Duke Energy and all three units have since returned to normal oversight. All three will continue to receive the detailed routine or baseline inspections conducted at all nuclear power plants.

NRC inspectors continually evaluate each nuclear plants safety, and each year we take a detailed look at that information to identify any trends and help plan future inspections, said NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree. Inspection results are available throughout the year, but these annual meetings allow us to talk to local residents and answer any questions they may have.

Routine inspections are carried out by the NRC resident inspectors assigned to the plant and by inspection specialists from the Region II office in Atlanta.

The annual assessment letter for the Oconee plant, as well as current performance information for Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3, is available on the NRC website.
