No: 21-046 November 8, 2021 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Atomic Safety and Licensing Board to Hold Oral Argument on Oconee Subsequent License Renewal A Nuclear Regulatory Commission Atomic Safety and Licensing Board will conduct an oral argument via WebEx on Nov. 16 regarding a petition to hold an adjudicatory hearing on Duke Energys application to renew the operating licenses of Oconee Nuclear Station Units 1, 2 and 3 for an additional 20 years. The units are located in Seneca, South Carolina.

The oral argument will begin at 1 p.m. Eastern Time. It will address proposed contentions from petitioners Beyond Nuclear and the Sierra Club challenging aspects of the dam failure impacts analysis of applicant Duke Energys environmental report. The three administrative judges on the Board will hear argument from representatives for the petitioners, Duke Energy and the NRC staff.

The public will have listen-only access to the oral argument by dialing 800-857-9887, passcode 5721898, followed by the # sign. The Board is composed of three administrative judges from the NRCs ASLB Panel. Boards conduct adjudicatory hearings on major licensing actions by the NRC and are independent of the NRC staff. A Boards rulings may be appealed to the Commission, the five-member body that sets NRC policy.
