No: 20-020 April 1, 2020 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC to Discuss Temporary Work-Hour Limit Exemption Guidance for Nations Nuclear Power Plants The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a teleconference Thursday, April 2, to discuss the agencys new guidance for U.S. nuclear power plants to implement alternate work-hour limits, if needed, during the COVID-19 public health emergency.

The teleconference, which is expected to run from 10-11:30 a.m., will cover the NRCs consideration of work hours and effective management of worker fatigue during the COVID-19 emergency. Meeting details, including call-in information, are available on the NRC website.

The NRC issued a letter on March 28 detailing the process for ensuring that plant operators have flexibility in scheduling staff during COVID-19 to ensure continued safe and secure operations. The Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation will use its existing authority to grant, upon request from individual licensees, 60-day exemptions from standard work-hour controls specified in the letter. Exempted plants must use alternate administrative methods to manage worker fatigue, based on limits described in the letter.
