NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa.resource@nrc.gov Site: www.nrc.gov Blog: http://public-blog.nrc-gateway.gov No.11-180 September 23, 2011 NRC MEETINGS IN MARYLAND, ILLINOIS AND CALIFORNIA TO DISCUSS LONG-TERM STORAGE OF SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will conduct three public meetings in Rockville, Md., Oakbrook Terrace, Ill., and San Luis Obispo, Calif., to discuss issues relating to the long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel from commercial power reactors.

The meetings are intended to inform and engage the public on the NRCs plans to tackle technical and regulatory issues related to extended storage of spent fuel, and on plans to develop a draft environmental impact statement for an update of the NRCs waste confidence decision and rule.

The first meeting will be held Sept. 28 in the Two White Flint North Building Auditorium at NRC headquarters in Rockville, Md., from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Eastern Time. The second meeting will be held Oct. 4 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1000 Drury Lane, in Oakbrook Terrace, from 9:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m. Central Time. The third will be held on Oct. 6 at the Embassy Suites San Luis Obispo, 333 Madonna Rd., in San Luis Obispo, from 9:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m. Pacific Time.

The public may participate in the Rockville meeting on Sept. 28 by teleconference.

The Rockville meeting will also be webcast through the NRCs website at http://video.nrc.gov, though webcast viewers will only be able to ask questions by using the teleconference.
