NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa.resource@nrc.gov Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.10-125 July 13, 2010 NRC AND FEMA TO HOLD MORE PUBLIC MEETINGS ON PROPOSED CHANGES TO EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS GUIDANCE At the request of stakeholders, the NRC and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are holding two additional public meetings to discuss proposed enhancements to emergency preparedness guidance document NUREG-0654/FEMA-REP-1, Supplement 3, Guidance for Protective Action Recommendations for General Emergencies. The NRC has held two previous public meetings on the subject.

The meetings are scheduled for July 19 in Wilmington, Del., and July 21 in Tampa, Fla.

Among the proposed revisions to the guidance document are increasing the involvement of offsite response organizations in developing protective action strategies, considering staged evacuation as the initial protective action at a General Emergency, the highest emergency classification level, and increasing the use of shelter-in-place for certain accident scenarios.

NRC representatives at the meetings will summarize the proposed changes and attendees will be able to ask questions. Interested attendees can obtain the relevant documents on www.regulations.gov (Docket ID NRC-2010-0080) before the meeting.

The July 19 meeting will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel Wilmington Downtown, 700 King St. The July 21 meeting will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel Tampa Westshore Airport, 4500 West Cypress St.

Teleconferencing and Web conferencing capabilities are available. For more information on registering to participate by phone or Web, see the meeting notice at: www.nrc.gov/public-involve/public-meetings/index.cfm.
