NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa.resource@nrc.gov Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.10-058 April 1, 2010 NRC CHAIRMAN GREGORY B. JACZKO SWEARS IN TWO NEW COMMISSIONERS; WILLIAM D. MAGWOOD IV AND WILLIAM C. OSTENDORFF TAKE OATHS Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Gregory B. Jaczko Thursday administered the oath of office to two new commissioners, William D. Magwood IV and William C. Ostendorff, in a ceremony at NRC headquarters.

A third new commissioner, Dr. George Apostolakis, a professor of nuclear science, will be sworn in April 23 to bring the agency to its full complement of five commissioners for the first time since 2007.

Im looking forward to the new Commissioners joining our discussions about important policy issues facing the agency and the nation, said Jaczko. They bring exceptional backgrounds and talents to the NRC. Their insights and experience will strengthen our decision-making and help us to continue to meet our critical mission to protect public health, safety and the environment.

Public service has been one of the most rewarding elements of my career, and I am looking forward to contributing to the agencys important work, said Magwood, who served two Presidents and five Energy Secretaries at the Department of Energy from 1994 to 2005.

Since that time, he has provided strategic advice to domestic and international clients through his consulting practice.

Ostendorff, once the Principal Deputy Administrator at the National Nuclear Security Administration, added, There are important issues facing the NRC in the coming years and I am looking forward to being part of the debate to shape the outcomes. Ostendorff, a retired Navy Captain, most recently worked at the National Academies and also held a senior staff position at the House Armed Services Committee.

Magwood and Ostendorff join Jaczko and Kristine Svinicki on the Commission. Dr. Dale Klein, chairman from 2006-2009 and a commissioner since then, left the commission upon the appointment of his successor. His last day as Commissioner was March 30.

The NRC has five-year terms, each staggered one year apart. Magwood was confirmed to a term that ends June 30 of this year, and reappointed for a term to expire June 30, 2015.

Ostendorffs term will end June 30, 2011. When Apostolakis takes office, it will be for a term ending June 30, 2014.
