NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa.resource@nrc.gov Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.09-096 May 29, 2009 NRC HONORED AS A 2009 TOP SUPPORTER OF THE ENGINEERING PROGRAMS OF THE HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES AND MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTIONS The seventh annual survey conducted by US Black Engineer and Information Technology (USBE & IT) magazine lists the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as one of its 2009 top supporters of the engineering schools at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and minority-serving institutions.

The list includes 32 federal agencies as well as an additional 44 other government, nonprofit and private sector firms. The deans of the accredited HBCU engineering programs and the Advancing Minorities Interest in Engineering Corporate Academic Alliance developed the selection criteria and determined those organizations that were most supportive.

Factors used for evaluating organizations included: support for infrastructure modernization and enhancement, research, participation on advisory councils, faculty development opportunities, scholarships, student projects, stipends, co-ops and career opportunities.

Some of the institutions invited to participate in the survey were: University of Puerto Rico, University of Texas at El Paso, University of Texas - Pan American, Colorado State University -

Pueblo, Alabama A&M University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Howard University, Jackson State University, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, Prairie View A&M University, Southern University and A&M College, Tennessee State University, and Tuskegee University.

The USBE & IT magazine will salute the top corporate and government organizations for their support in a special publication known as the Deans Edition. The NRCs Office of Small Business and Civil Rights is being recognized today at the HBCU Response and Professional Connections Conference at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

The 2009 list will be made available after a special publication is distributed at www.blackengineer.com.
