Docket No.: 50-348 NL-08-0179 50-364 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATTN: Document Control Desk Washington, D. C. 20555-0001 Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant - Units 1 and 2 Reply to Acknowledgement of Actions for Confirmatory Action Letter No. NRR-07-018 Ladies and Gentlemen:

On January 30, 2008 the NRC staff issued the letter "Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2 - Acknowledgement of Actions for Confirmatory Action Letter No. NRR-07-018 (TAC Nos. MD4151 and MD4152)." The NRC letter indicated that several commitments remained open, and that, for Unit 2, Farley Nuclear Plant (FNP) has yet to " perform reexaminations on two pressurizer Alloy 82/182 butt welds prior to October 2009 " This item appears to be based on commitments listed in Enclosure 3 of the Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) letter NL-07-0483, dated March 6,2007 (ML070650572) to the NRC.

This letter is to clarify that the commitment to "perform reexaminations on two pressurizer Alloy 82/182 butt welds prior to October 2009" has been satisfied. The reexamination was completed as part of the inspection of all six welds during 2R18, as reported in SNC letter NL-07-1317 dated July 18,2007 which stated:

"During the Spring 2007 Unit 2 outage 2R18, all six pressurizer dissimilar metal butt welds containing Alloy 82/182 material were examined to meet MRP-139 volumetric examination requirements."

The outstanding commitments for Farley Unit 2, from the SNC letter NL-07-0483 dated March 6, 2007 for Unit 2 are:

  • Perform MRP-139 mitigation and post-mitigation examination activities on the pressurizer nozzles by the end of the 2R20 outage (Spring 2010).

  • If a shut down occurs due to excessive primary system unidentified leakage, and if the leakage cannot be confirmed to originate from a source other than the pressurizer nozzles, a bare metal visual examination of Alloy 82/182 weld locations on the pressurizer will be performed to determine whether the leakage originated at those locations. (This commitment is ongoing until mitigation of pressurizer Alloy 82/182 welds.)
  • Examinations of pressurizer weld overlays will be performed in accordance with MRP 139 and/or NRC approved alternatives. (This commitment is a continuing compliance commitment.)

In conclusion, the commitment regarding reexaminations for the two pressurizer Alloy 82/182 butt welds, noted as open in the NRC letter dated January 30, 2008 has been completed, as documented in SNC letter NL-07-1317 dated July 18, 2007.

Please also note that ADAMS contains a version of the Confirmatory Action Letter No. NRR 07-018 (ML070670264) that indicates a letter date of March 15,2007. The actual date, on the signed letter received by SNC, is March 12,2007.

This letter contains no NRC commitments.
