REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CALVERT CLIFFS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT. UNIT NOS.1 ANQ1
- 1. In its submittals Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) indicated that a total of six pipe segments in each unit were susceptible to theimally-induced pressurization. The licensee indicated that operating instructions would be changed to include draining of three of the pipe segments prior to plant operations.
For two of the pipe segments, BGE also indicated that no overpressurization would occur due to existing installed insulation. The NRC staff requests that BGE provide the following information.
a) Provide the applice.ble design criteria for the piping and the valves. Include the required load combinations, b) Provide a drawing of the piping run between the isolation values. Include the lengths and thicknesses of the insulation.
c) Provide the maximum - calculated temperature and pressure for the pipe run. Describe in detail, the method to calculate these pressure and temperature values. This should include a discussion of the heat transfer model used in the analyses and the basis for the heat transfer coefficients used in the analyses.
- 2. BGE also indicated for one segment, either a relief device would be installed or insulation I
would be added to the piping section exposed to loss-of coolant accident temperature.
Please clarify the specific method chosen to prevent overpressurization. If BGE is adding i
insulation, please provide the same information as for the two piping segments discussed in request 1.
