CHARLES H. CnosE Baltimore Gas and Electric Company Vice President Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant

,' Nuclear Energy 1650 Calvert Cliffs Parkway Lusby Maryland 20657 410 495-4455 June 30,1998 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 ATTESTION: Document Control Desk

SUBJECT:

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Unit Nos.1 & 2; Docket Nos. 50-317 & 50-318 Request for Additional Information Related to the Generic Letter 96-06 Response for Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant (TAC Nos.M96792 and M96793)

References (a)-(g) provide background on the Calvert Cliffs consideration of Generic Letter 96-06 as it applies to this facility. Reference (h) asked for analysis details beyond what had been provided by Baltimore Gas and Electric Company or had been previously asked for by the Nuclear Reguletory Commission.

As expressed in Reference (g), the only remaining concern resulting from the issues raised in Generic Letter 96-06 was water hammer at the containment air coolers. Following the direction given in Supplement 1 to Generic Letter 96-06, we revisited our original analysis of the water hammer event in the Service Water System. The preliminary results indicated that the event would be less severe than originally thought and that plant modifications would not be needed. As we have proceeded with the analysis, new information has developed and is being factored in; as a result, the analysis is not yet complete. There is still no indication that modification to the plant will be necessary and our operability determination is not affected by this new information.

Because the ongoing reanalysis is directly applicable to your questions, we are not prepared at this time to respond to Reference (h). We will revise our original response to Generic Letter 96-06 upon  !/,

completion of our reanalysis, which we expect will be in October 1998. ,/
