Gentlemen:
t We have been informed by the Division of Compliance that design j
modifications have'been made to the control rod drive hydraulic line t
fl
. penetrations to the Nine Mile Point primary containment. Because of possible safety aspects involved, we believe that such changes should be reported as well as providing the bases and a safety evaluation j
[~
- for the changes for our review.
l,
' In addition, based on our July 8,1968 meeting with you, we understand
'{-
that work is underway on the repair of certain of the welds between 1
the stub tubes and the control, rod' drive housings in the reactor pressure vessel. We request.that the following information be provided for our review.
J!
- 1. _ Describe the bases and justification regarding your action on contouring the shop welds of the stub tubes in the reactor pressure vessel.
6 I
~
2.
We understand that the field weld repair program.
f; i
resulted in the deposition of weld metal on the side of the stub tubes. We will need your evaluation of i
,j the effects of this weld metal for our review.
a 3
Describe your plan for the forthecming cleaning operation and hydrostatic test of the reactor pressure vessel. We are.especially interested in any plans i
you may have for _ the performance of a detailed " record" dye penetrant ched of the stub tube surfaces, field welds, shop welds, safe ends and in-core monitor welds prior to the hydrostatic test.
