PROPOSED MEETING IN MEXICO TO DISCUSS PROPOSED LOCATION OF LLW SI IN TEXAS Attached are copies of an August 14 letter from the Texas Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Authority and an August 25 cable from the U.S.
Emt'assy in Mexico City concerning a proposed meeting to discuss Texas plans to ircate a low-level waste site near the US/ Mexico border.
s I was alerted to this proposed meeting by Region IV on August 14 I then passed this information on to Paul Storing at State who had been expecting a request for such a meeting. However, he was unaware of the proposed September 21 date and, at that time, hoped to defer the meeting until early to mid-October.
I understand State is now considering favorably the September 21 date.
State believes NRC should attend the meeting and possibly present a paper on U.S. regulatory practices for LLW sites. Since the Mexicans have requested a meeting of technical experts, we are talking with other NRC offices about possible attendance.
It appears now that either NMSS or Region IV staff will participate.
