NOV1 1973 Note to J. D. Lafleur, OGL CD4 ens ON !%RVIKui POLIGNI4 IXPE:RI!BCS In response to your neco of Cbtober 29,1973, the fn11Mng are zqr views regarding the subject Marviken follow-on Iroject.

1.

'Jhis is potentially a very expensive project if 5 hanter-rod W1es aid 28 We are used as well as the supporting hardware required.

2.

Mn projcet a7. pears tio be directed at a " demonstration type" experi-ment, tus its usefulness is vary dependent upon an:mrate sinulation of an IB4R. In this regard, tM project is aimed primarily at reactor systems of ir4crtance to Sweden, i.e., extc.tnal and internal circulation BWR design. Most of the U.S. plants are jet purap design which is kind of a cnnbination of the others. Beaause of this, the usefulness of tne project to the U.S. is significar.1y reduced unless tJu tests are directed nore toward ootaining data that can be used for analytical cois develo;rxmt and verification.

'Ib do this woald require, as a miniarn, a ruch inproved neasarement system.

3.

While this project may provide data of general interest, W-of tne above two consideraticus, I believe that our noney can be better spent on safett research rore diro:tly applicable to U.S. plants.

110 wever, it woJtid be to our benefit and interest to be kept WNmai on the program and waere appropriate to participate by some sort of exchange agrmments. Pbr instaa:e, we probably have, or will have, the best analysis technigaes for assessing the tests and for assist-ing tle design process.

4.

It is r - nded that tne followap on exchange agreenents, etc., to obtain data as raay be appropriate fran this effort be handled by H. Toots, RSR. tbte: St&@rds is also interested in the data that might be obtaired from the isolation valve tests; however, this is mare apaccrpriately an irdustry type project.
