Amendment to Medtronic's Special Nuclear Materials license SNM-1156 and by-products license 22-13456-01.
Dear Sir:
Medtronic, Inc. herewith applies for amendment to licenses SNM-ll56 and 22-13456-01 to include possession and use of radioactive materials at its animal research facility at the following address:

Medtronic is currently licensed to possess up to 50 grams of Plutonium-238 and 150 sources of Promethium-147 as sealed sources for the testing, development, and manufacture of radioisotope-fueled implantable cardiac pacemakers at its St. Anthony and Rice Creek facilities.
This application requests license to perform non-destructive testing of these power supplies in the Coon Rapids research facility.
These tests will be limited to short-and long-term implantations in animals.
Control of the sealed sources at the Coon Rapids Animal Research facility will consist of the entire facility as the storage area.
The research facility is locked when not in use and is under 24-hour surveillance.
Sealed sources prior to implantation in research animals are stored in a locked storage area designated as A in the floor plan diagram.
Fire protection is provided by the Coon Rapids Fire Department located less than 2 miles from the research facility.
Personnel working regularly in the areas of the research facility where non-implanted sources are stored, during the actual implanta-tion procedure in research animals, and during the daily Ob%

1 monitoring and care of research animals which have implanted sealed sources will wear personnel monitoring badges as i
specified in our present licenses.
The use of these sources at this facility will be under the control and supervision of the Medtronic Safety Radiation Committee.
At no time will any tesis be implemented which would in any way com-promise the integrity of containment of the sealed sources.
Implantation of sealed sources in research animals will con-sist of periods varying from 1 to 7 years.
Following the termination of such studies research animals will be euthan-itized and the sealed sources will be removed and disposed of in accordance with the conditions of our present licenses.
The maximum number of sealed sources maintained at the animal research facility would not exceed 25 sources with Pu-238 as the principle isotope; no single source to contain more than 1 gram of Pu-238 and 25 sources of Promethium-147 as sealed sources.
Testing and monitoring of the sealed sources

for leakage will be conducted as specified by our present licenses.
Licenses for the possession and use at the animal research facility should be valid for seven years from the time of issue.
