Dear Mr. Nussbaumer:
Inc. we are hereby submitting to you the subject As requested by'Medtronic,X W data.
tnouve. eu The Betacel manufactured by McDonnell Douglas Corporation at Richland, Washington is fabricated in the manner shop in the attached drawings 1D12301, 1D12302,,. _,
and 1D12304.
Please note that these drawings contain proprietary information._ _,-
The sub-assembly consisting of parts 1D12304-1,1D12305-1,1D12308-1 and 1D12309-1 is assembled and the ceramic parts cemented in place. The inner structure is placed in this sub-assembly and the outer shell, part #1D12304-501, which is a 0.002-in. interference fit, is placed over it and the two parts are pressed together. The lead wires are then connected, and this assembly is placed in part 1D12311-1 shown in drawing 1D12301. The lead wires are put through the tubulation in the feedthrough/ lid, part A12456-6, and it is pressed into place..
The completed assembly is velded in accordance with the detail shown on drawing 1D12301. After smearing, inspection of the ucld by x-ray or ultrasonics is performed, and the Betacel is leak-checked.
If free of leaks, the protective shield 1D12312-1 is installed over the ceramic to metal seal and welded as shown.
Specific quality control procedures exercised during the above assembly process are:
1.
Parts Inspection Upon receipt, all parts are inspected for dimensions. In addition, each Each feedthrough/ lid is inspected to assure continuity of both brazes.
is helium lenk checked to assure no leak greater than 10-9 cc/sec at 1 atmosphere pressure difference. Microscopic inspection of each ceramic
, insulator assures that it has no visible flaws.
Cans and lids are matched to provide 0.001" fit-up before welding.

Welding Electron beam velding is used to fasten each lid to its can and to seal the feedthrough tubulation. Welds are inspected by x-ray or ultrasonics for vidth of weld nugget and for evidence of imperfections or cracks.
After closure each scaled capsule is placed in a helium bomb at 100 psig for a minimum of 3 hours3.472222e-5 days
8.333333e-4 hours
4.960317e-6 weeks
1.1415e-6 months
. Within 2 minutes of depressurization each capsule is bubble tested in water. A helium leak detector is then used_to verify that leakage is less than 10-9 cc/sec.
