Dear Mr. Brown:

M. ic, Inc. wishes to amend its Possession License j//th " Ilbg MN to allow us to store one Medtronic' Laurens- ' hicatel Model 9000 at each of seven of our district offices. We wish to do this to alleviate some of the severe problems we have had in shipping Model 9000s to various parts of the country from our Minneapolis facility. l The laws and restrictions governing the shipment of nuclear material are copious, complex, confusing, and contradictory. Although our nuclear pacemakers are r. packaged in approved shipping containers, they are still sometimes wrongfully refused shipment by pilots and freight forwarders. The delays and uncertainties in shipping these pacemakers has been a considerable burden to patients and physicians as well as our sales repre-sentatives and Shipping Department. Allowing us to store these units in district offices would reduce the number of connections required to transport the pacemaker to the patient. All the district. offices contain locked files where the isotopic pacemakers can be kept. The offices are locked after hours. Because all the sources are sealed and will be kept in shipping containers, there will be no handling of the nuclear material itself.
