VT-2 EXAMINER QUALIFICATION Rt,'EF REQUEST, PEACH BOTTOM ATOMIC POWER STATION, UNIT NOS. 2 AND , (TACS NOS. M99383 AND M99384)

Dear Mr. Hunger:

We have reviewed your July 21, 1997, letter requesting relief from the 9.pplicable American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code,Section XI, pertaining to the qualification of VT-2 examination personnel. You requested our approval to imdement ASME Code Case N-546, " Alternative Requirements for Qualification of V1-2 Examination Personnel," in your inservice inspection program during the current inspection interval. We conclude that your proposed alternatives to the Code qualification requirements for examination personnel, in conjunction with your added provisions, provide an acceptable level of quality and safety. Therefore, pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(1),

we authorize your relief request to implement alternatives provided in Code Case N-546. We authorize you to use Code Case N-546 for the current interval at Peach Bottom Units 2 & 3, until the Code Case is approved by reference in Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.147. At that time, you must follow all provisions in Code Case N-546 with limitations ' issued in RG 1.147, if any, if you continue to implement this Code Case.

A copy of the safety evaluation is enclosed.
