Stella ACRS/ACNW Genior Fellow SUBJCCT: Report on HPDE High Integrity Containers Just a note8,to tell you how much ! appreciated your memorandum of September 1980, ,and the report on the "Estimation of 300-Year Dose to High Level Waste Disposal."

Denshty Polyethylene High Integrity Containers for Low Your n.emorandum was clear and to the point and it provided exactly thw information that I believe we were seeking. In the way of speci fic comment s, I offer the following:

1. You stated that your ,orimary attention was directed to calculations t he cont ainer .

of the energetic photon flux at the outer surface of higher?

Might the flux for the inner sur f ace have been Perhaps the di f ference would have been minimal but i f the innor sur f ace receives the higher dose, would it not be more conservative to calculate it at that point?

2. What impact (di f f erence in dose) do you estimate results from the fact that you assumed the contents in the HIC were comparable to water? In fact, what HIC container? is the density of the contents of an average
3. I found your "Additional Observations" of particular importance.

In this regard, the observation that the total dose rate "ef f ectively sets a limi t on the 300 year abcorbed dose" is very sI Dni ficant. Also signi ficant is the fact that polyethylene exhibits an inverse dose rate response to irradiation.

In summary, this was a good report. It was short and it answered my questions.
