Dear Congresswoman Byron:
VStello, DEDROGR This Nuclear letter responds Regulatory to your Commission inquiry (NRC) dated May has considered 7,1985, into consolidating about the whether the government-owned building in Germantown, Maryland. [f The ERDA Building, which houses elements of the Department of Energy, has not been considered by NRC and the General Services Administration (GSA) as a potential site for consolidation of the agency. The total square footage in
. the building, 360,040 square feet of office, special, and support type space, is not sufficient to house all NRC Headquarters personnel and facilities. Our current space requirements total approximately 554,000 square feet of space.
This includes approximately 349,000 square feet of office space for 2,583 people and 146,000 square feet of special purpose space for hearing rooms, conference facilities, public document rooms, computer facilities and the like, plus a 10% circulation factor for public corridors and elevator lobbies.
The NRC is currently housed in multiple buildings in the District of Columbia, Silver Spring, Rockville, and Bethesda, Maryland. Because of the Commission's requirement to be near the Congress and other Federal agencies with whom we do business regularly, relocating a portion of our headquarters to Gemantown would not be geographically or functionally desirable.
NRC and GSA are considering housing options in the Bethesda, Maryland and Upper Northwest areas of the city, along the Metro red line near Metro stations, because these locations would meet both the needs of the Comission and the commutation needs of our employees.
'l Thank you for your interest. Please contact me if I may be of further assistance.
Sincerely, pipesWilliam J.Dirsis William J. Dircks Executive Director for Operations I
